The rotate button in most viewers only changes your view. To save the rotation: on Mac, rotate in Preview and save; on Windows, rotate in Microsoft Edge and click Save; on iPhone, rotate the page in the Files app. Otherwise use an online rotate tool or Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Mac (Preview)

  1. Open the PDF and show thumbnails: View > Thumbnails.
  2. Select the page(s).
  3. Press Cmd+R (right) or Cmd+L (left).
  4. File > Save. The rotation is now permanent.

Windows (Microsoft Edge)

  1. Open the PDF in Edge.
  2. Click the Rotate button in the toolbar. It rotates all pages.
  3. Click Save.

For single pages on Windows, use an online rotate tool or PDFsam Basic.

iPhone and iPad (Files app)

Open the PDF, show thumbnails, long-press a page > Rotate Left/Right. Changes are saved automatically.

Adobe Acrobat

  • Reader (free): View > Rotate View affects only your screen.
  • Acrobat Pro: Tools > Organize Pages > rotate > Save.

Prevent sideways scans

Why does my rotation reset when I reopen the PDF?

Your viewer only rotated the display, not the file. Use a tool that saves the rotation into the PDF (Preview, Edge, Acrobat Pro, or an online rotate tool).

Can I rotate just one page?

Yes. Select only that page's thumbnail in Preview, Acrobat or an online tool, and rotate it.
